Bulgaria: Shell's Black Sea well Khan Kubrat-1 disappoints
18 Jul 2019
Shell's Khan Kubrat-1 exploration well in the 1-14 Khan Kubrat block in the Black Sea has been plugged and abandoned after encountering non-commercial hydrocarbon shows in target reservoirs. JV partner Woodside reported the well result in its Second Quarter 2019 Report announced today.
Woodside reports that 'the well reached target depth of 3327 metres in late May 2019 with non-commercial hydrocarbon shows in target reservoirs. The well was plugged and abandoned as planned. Further studies are being undertaken to inform future activities in the block'.
Woodside reported in July 2018 that the Company had entered into a farm-in agreement with Shell International Exploration and Development Italia to acquire a 30% non-operated participating interest in Block 1-14 Khan Kubrat, located within the continental shelf and exclusive economic zone of the Republic of Bulgaria in the Black Sea. This opportunity targets an emerging oil and gas province close to existing infrastructure and markets.
