Getech releases Globe 2021 - a vital tool for the energy transition

Getech, a provider of geoscience data, knowledge and software to the energy & strategic minerals industries, has released the 2021 annual update to its flagship Globe knowledgebase.

Globe documents the tectonic, geographic and climatic evolution of Earth over the last 400 million years with unsurpassed spatial and temporal resolution.

This allows explorers to uncover a wide range of resources across today’s landscape, including geothermal heat, electrification minerals such as copper and lithium, as well as reservoirs for storing hydrogen or carbon.

The distribution of heat, the location of minerals, and the quality of reservoirs all depend on geologic processes over millions of years: Globe tells the evolutionary story that reveals where to look.

Globe has been an essential tool in the hydrocarbon industry for a decade, but it is even more useful for the Energy Transition.

According to Getech Chief Geoscientist Bill Heins:

'Energy systems of the future will still depend on subsurface fluid flow, whether for the extraction of heat, the storage of hydrogen, or the sequestration of CO2. Reservoir presence, capacity, and quality are still fundamental determinants of economic success, which depend completely on geologic history.

'The geologic processes that deposit critical electrification minerals like sediment-hosted copper follow similar principals to those that control hydrocarbon accumulations, so they can be explored in the same way. Documenting Earth’s history is a vital component of any exploration, no matter what the resource. Globe provides consistent, reliable information that cuts through Nature’s complexity to support rational economic decisions.'

Globe 2021 includes a new Tectonic Events Catalogue, additional 2D gravity & magnetic profiles, new and enhanced Basin Summary Charts, plus new palaeogeology and enhanced drainage attribution for better reservoir risking.

Getech continuously innovates new applications of Globe for additional resource types. An example for integrated technical and commercial favourability mapping of regional geothermal opportunities across the temperature spectrum was recently presented at the Geothermal Rising Annual Conference.
