Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi met July 26 with the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, and the Prime Minister, Askar Mamin.

During the meeting, Eni and KazMunaiGas signed cooperation agreements for the development of renewable, hydrogen and biofeedstock projects in Kazakhstan, strengthening and widening their historic partnership to the energy transition scope.

Through the agreements, Eni marks a further tangible step in line with the company’s commitment towards a just energy transition and decarbonization, while contributing to the Country’s carbon neutrality targets. In Kazakhstan, Eni, through its local renewable subsidiary ArmWind LLP, is a key player in the development of the renewable energy sector through two wind farms and one photovoltaic plant for a total capacity of approximately 150MW.

Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi said:

'The agreements signed today enhance the perimeter of our historic collaboration with Kazakhstan, further directing it towards a low carbon emission future. Besides the wind and solar activities, Eni will leverage all its proprietary technologies, developed over the last few years and focused on energy transition. I wish to thank the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Government and the State companies for their continuous collaboration towards reaching the Country’s and Eni’s decarbonization targets'.

Eni has been present in Kazakhstan since 1992, where it is a joint operator of the Karachaganak field and an equity partner in various projects in the Northern Caspian Sea, including the Kashagan giant field. In 2018, Eni became a joint operator in the exploration block Isatay and Abay, with the state company KMG. Eni launched its first renewables project in Kazakhstan in 2020 through the 48 MW Badamsha Wind Farm, located in the Aktobe Region, with an annual power generation of about 195 GWh and overall CO2 saving of 172,000 tons per year. The company is now executing the second phase of the project, with 48 MW of additional capacity. In March 2021, Eni has also inaugurated the construction works of a 50 MW photovoltaic plant in the south of Kazakhstan.
