InCapture has announced the award of Greenhouse Gas Assessment Permit G-15-AP, strategically situated on the North West Shelf of Australia. The award marks a significant step towards a greener future, setting the stage for innovative carbon capture and storage (CCS) solutions that promise to transform the region’s approach to managing industrial emissions.

Prime Location for Existing Industry and Sustainable Innovation

The southern part of the G-15-AP permit area lies only 120km from the major industrial ports of Dampier and Port Hedland. Spanning an area of over 6,500km², the assessment permit’s prime location offers potential for long-term, safe, and secure greenhouse gas storage. As industries strive to achieve net-zero emissions, the G-15-AP permit area may provide a viable solution for the hard-to-abate sectors.

Pioneering Pathways to Net-Zero

InCapture is already appraising several storage options within the permit area, with the ambitious goal of launching a fully operational CCS project by the early 2030s. This initiative will not only support Australia’s net-zero pledges but also extend its impact to neighbouring countries in South-East Asia, Korea, and Japan, offering world-class storage solutions in the carbon management chain.

A Collaborative Effort for a Greener Tomorrow

The G-15-AP project is a collaborative venture, operated by InCapture holding 75% equity in the project alongside partners SK earthon Australia Pty Ltd ('SK earthon') with a 20% equity interest and Carbon CQ Pty Ltd ('Carbon CQ') with a 5% interest.

InCapture is a carbon storage project explorer who identifies and appraises sites for safe and secure carbon storage.  InCapture identified the G-15-AP area as having significant potential for carbon sequestration and successively formed a strategic joint venture partnership to appraise and develop the area.

SK earthon, a wholly owned subsidiary of South Korea’s SK Innovation, brings a wealth of experience in CCS projects, including the notable Shepherd Project which aims to capture CO2 from Korean industrial zones and transport to Malaysia for storage. SK earthon also participates in South Korea’s National CCS R&D projects including marine CO2 storage monitoring projects and geophysical surveys for large-scale CCS storage evaluations.

Carbon CQ, based in Perth, specialises in CCS consultancy and project development, providing technical, commercial, and regulatory expertise.

Julia Davies, General Manager of InCapture, emphasized the critical role of CCS in achieving sustainability goals: 'CCS is essential for Australia and its neighbouring countries to meet their net-zero commitments. The recent award of greenhouse gas assessment permits by the Australian Commonwealth Government is a testament to our collective commitment to secure safe and effective storage sites for domestic emitters. The G-15-AP project is poised to play a pivotal role in decarbonizing Australia’s industrial sectors, with a special focus on hard-to-abate industries.'

Davies added, 'Our world-class storage sites at G-15-AP will not only support local efforts but will also enhance the carbon management capabilities of our valued trading partners in South-East Asia, Korea, and Japan. Secure storage solutions are vital in maintaining the Pilbara region’s status as an industrial powerhouse.'
