INPEX has been conducting evaluation work on the Bonaparte CCS Project through its subsidiary INPEX Browse E&P as a consortium including its partners TotalEnergies CCS Australia and Woodside Energy in the GHG*2 assessment area G-7-AP, located approx. 260 km offshore from Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia, from 2022. INPEX has announce that it has decided to start the conceptual design (Preliminary Front-End Engineering Design/Pre-FEED) for the development of the Project. The Project is expected to become the world's largest CCS project in the future.
*1 CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage): Separation, capture and storage of carbon dioxide (CO2)
*2 GHG (Greenhouse Gas): Greenhouse gas
G-7-AP Block Location
The start of the conceptual design for the project follows the successful completion of an engineering concept selection and comprehensive evaluation, which included a 1,800km2 3D seismic survey and drilling of two CCS appraisal wells, demonstrating the presence of a high-quality saline aquifer reservoir and a thick shielding layer suitable for safe and permanent carbon storage in the Bonaparte Basin, where the project is located. The Consortium plans to transport and store CO2 safely and permanently in the Bonaparte Basin, located offshore northern Australia, which has a potential carbon storage capacity of more than 10 million tonnes per year in the future. The Consortium plans to start injecting CO2 around 2030, and expects the project to contribute significantly to the decarbonization of northern Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. The Consortium is currently conducting detailed analysis of the reservoir evaluation data in order to make a GHG injection reservoir qualification declaration, which is necessary to obtain a GHG injection license from the Australian government authorities .
In addition, expectations are high that the Ichthys LNG Project, in which INPEX will serve as the operator, will be a major potential customer for this business.
