The second module of the Natural Gas Processing Unit (UPGN) of the Boaventura Energy Complex, located in Itaboraí (RJ), began commercial operations this Sunday (04/05). In addition to the first module, inaugurated last year, the unit's total processing capacity reaches 21 million m³/day.
The Boaventura UPGN is part of Petrobras' Rota 3 Integrated Project, through which natural gas from production fields such as Tupi, Búzios, Sapinhoá, among others, is transported. This is a rich gas that, after being processed, generates three important products for the market: Natural Gas (NG); Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG or cooking gas); and C5+ (raw material in the petrochemical industry and fuel production).

'Petrobras is committed to offering even greater supply reliability to industrial and distribution customers committed to sustainable and competitive solutions. The commercial operation of UPGN module 2 is also essential to increase Petrobras' competitiveness in the new dynamic and competitive environment of the national gas market,' says Maurício Tolmasquim, director of Energy Transition and Sustainability.
For William França, director of Industrial Processes and Products at Petrobras, 'the entry into commercial operation of the two UPGN modules is yet another demonstration of a company that is committed to the country. Petrobras is reaffirming its strategy for the gas market and preserving the financial sustainability of an integrated project with high operational complexity.'
According to Petrobras' Director of Engineering, Technology and Innovation, Renata Baruzzi, 'the Rota 3 Integrated Project provides robustness to the flow of gas from the pre-salt production fields, ensuring that it can be processed in different Petrobras units. The commercial operation at UPGN is yet another demonstration of Petrobras' ability to deliver gas to the market.'
Since November 2024, Petrobras has been operating commercially at UPGN in the Boaventura Energy Complex, contributing to the supply of natural gas to the domestic market and reducing dependence on imports. In addition to the pipeline implemented for the flow of natural gas and the UPGN, Petrobras is working on projects in the Complex that include two gas-fired thermoelectric plants to participate in the auction scheduled for June 27, 2025 by the electricity sector, and refining units for the production of fuels and lubricants, for which the contracting processes for the works are underway.
