Petrobras has published the sale notice for the P-33 platform, according to the same model adopted in the decommissioning of P-32, within the company’s new guidelines for recycling and sustainable disposal of vessels.
P-33, currently located in the Campos Basin, in Marlim Field, is an FPSO (Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading Unit) measuring 337 meters in length, 54.5 meters wide and weighing approximately 49 thousand tons.

The P-33 sale notice is also focused on the national market, therefore the bidders must be a shipyard or a company associated with a national shipyard, with a mandatory dry dock.
The sustainable decommissioning of platforms generates opportunities for the allocation of labor in national shipyards. Petrobras’ expects to deactivate 26 units by 2027 and another 27 units from 2028 to 2029. In these projects, the company will destine more than 650 thousand tons of steel to recycling.
Environmental and social gains
The new model for the sustainable disposal of Petrobras’ vessels has as guidelines the implementation of actions aimed at minimizing waste generation; control of carbon emissions; prevention of impacts to the biodiversity; protection of the safety and health of workers involved in recycling activities; respect for the human rights commitments assumed by the company; recovery of metals and non-metals; in addition to the appropriate disposal of waste generated in the process.
These guidelines strengthen the guarantees that the recycling and final disposal of the company’s vessels will take place in accordance with the best ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) practices in the industry, focusing on generating value, sustainability, safety and respect for the people and the environment.
To meet these guidelines, the bidders, according to the notice, must submit a platform recycling plan, encompassing everything from the first procedures for receiving the unit and beginning of the dismantling work to the final disposal of the resulting waste, also ensuring that the unit’s hull dismantling activities will take place in a dry dock.
The Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM), prepared by a reputable company, will inform the preparation of the platform’s recycling plan and will allow the shipyard to plan the appropriate procedures to carry out the operation, including handling, storage and disposal of the materials and waste generated in the dismantling process. The execution of the plan will be closely monitored by Petrobras throughout the entire recycling process in order to ensure compliance with safety, environment, occupational health and social responsibility practices in a sustainable and auditable way.
Petrobras will be responsible for delivering the platform at the shipyard indicated by the buyer, ensuring it will be recycled and cease navigating. The shipyards are also required to have an operating license that explicitly includes dismantling activities, and an installed capacity for the temporary storage and handling of materials, with a contingency and emergency plan, in addition to following the best practices in occupational safety.
The deadline for interested companies to apply for the P-33 decommissioning notice is October 16, 2023. Afterward, the period for technical visits and bids will be open until the deadline on November 20, 2023.
