Axpo today inaugurated its first wind farm in Finland. Located in the municipality of Vörå, the Lålax facility was officially opened at a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the presence of Finland’s Minister for European Affairs, Joakim Strand. The launch is a significant milestone in the expansion of renewable energy in the Ostrobothnia region and heralds further Axpo projects in the country.

In Brief:

  • Axpo launches its first wind farm in Finland, with total capacity of 24.8 MW.
  • Projected annual production of 70 million kilowatt hours could meet electricity needs of around 5,400 families.
  • Important step in expansion of renewable energy in western Finland, Axpo facility will help meet country’s ambitious climate goals.

Representatives from politics, local authorities and the community today joined Axpo to celebrate the official inauguration of its Lålax wind farm in the Finnish municipality of Vörå. The event was attended by guest of honour Joakim Strand, Finland’s Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering. Four turbines have total 24.8 MW capacity

The facility was technically commissioned in September 2025 following just eleven months of construction. Comprising four Vestas wind turbines, each with a rated capacity of 6.2 MW and a hub height of 134 metres, the wind farm has a total installed capacity of 24.8 MW. Its projected annual production of around 70 million kilowatt-hours could theoretically supply approximately 5,400 Finnish single-family homes with clean electricity. The generated electricity is fed into the transmission grid via a dedicated substation and marketed on the power exchange by Axpo Nordic.

Contribution to climate targets

Finland has committed by law to achieving climate neutrality by 2035 – one of the most ambitious targets worldwide. The project makes a substantial contribution to the local energy supply and the achievement of national climate goals. At the same time, is also strengthens the position of the Ostrobothnia region as an ideal location for renewable energy.

Head of Axpo’s Wind Division and Volkswind CEO Klaus Heckenberger, emphasising the project’s importance, said: 'This is a very special moment for us. The Lålax wind farm is our first wind energy project in Finland and the starting point for what lies ahead. We have built up an attractive project pipeline in the country over the past few years and are looking forward to developing further projects in future.'

Axpo Renewable Finland Managing Director Joakim Ingves said: 'We’re proud to have successfully delivered our first wind farm in Finland. This project is the result of the outstanding work by our local team in Vaasa. And we also want to thank all the other teams and partners who contributed to making this project possible.'

For the local municipality, the new wind farm also represents an important step forward. Vörå municipality Chief Executive Jan Finne said: 'We’re delighted with the cooperation we’ve received from Axpo. The investment represents an important step in the development of our municipality and, together with Axpo, contributes to a sustainable and secure energy supply for the future.'

Local residents tour farm

During the afternoon, Axpo opened the wind farm to interested residents from the region. Numerous guests took the opportunity to see the facilities first-hand and learn more about the technology, operation and significance of the project. In addition to guided tours of the wind turbines, a family programme with activities for children and catering was offered. Such activities form part of Axpo’s commitment to openness and transparency in the development of renewable energy projects, actively fostering interaction and dialogue with local communities.

Project builds on Volkswind expertise

Part of the Axpo Group since 2015, the project benefits from Axpo subsidiary Volkswind’s many years of experience in the development of wind power projects. The Axpo and Volkswind team has already constructed more than 100 wind farms across Germany and France, amounting to over 1,600 MW of installed capacity. This expertise is now being transferred to the Finnish market.
