Eni has been recognised for its commitment to reporting emissions, which have been rated 'Gold Standard' for the highest levels of data quality by the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0). The 'Gold Standard' award reflects Eni's methane strategy and its collaboration with other industry players and international organizations committed to emissions control throughout the value chain.
OGMP 2.0 is an initiative led by the International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), which sets a global benchmark for the reliability and transparency of methane emissions reporting in the oil and gas sector.
Eni joined OGMP 2.0 in 2020 as part of its ongoing is commitment to establish emissions reduction targets and progressively increase the transparency and accuracy of its reporting, which are prerequisites for measuring the effectiveness of mitigation actions. In 2023, Eni was awarded the 'Gold Standard Pathway' for significantly improving its methane emissions reporting implementation plans, in accordance with the OGMP 2.0 recommendations. In 2024, the company achieved 'Gold Standard reporting' for having effectively achieved the highest levels of data quality.
OGMP 2.0’s 2025 report recognized Eni for its continued progress, including identifying and quantifying emissions across non-operated assets, as well as training and technical assistance on the LDAR (Leak Detection and Repair) approach to fugitive emissions. LDAR training sessions were organised with the support of UNEP and was delivered to National Oil Company (NOC) personnel.
Eni was a founding member of the UNEP Oil & Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP) in 2014, as well as the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI) and the Methane Guiding Principles (MGP). In 2023, Eni joined the Oil & Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC), an initiative aimed at promoting transparent and concrete actions to reduce emissions, including methane and flaring. Eni also contributes to the Global Flaring and Methane Reduction Trust Fund (GFMR), an initiative launched by the World Bank to support governments and operators in developing countries eliminate routine flaring and reduce methane emissions from the O&G sector to near-zero by 2030.
Eni has also signed collaboration agreements with several national oil companies (NOCs) to share their expertise in methane management to enable methane reduction across the sector.
The commitment to reducing methane emissions is one of the levers of Eni's decarbonization plan, which also includes the progressive reduction of emissions from routine flaring and investments in energy efficiency, with the aim of achieving Net Zero Scope 1+2 emissions for the Upstream business by 2030, and for Eni as a whole by 2035.
