OEUK has today responded to NESO’s (National Energy System Operator's) latest Future Energy Scenarios report, which sets out four possible pathways for the UK’s energy transition.
OEUK Market Intelligence Manager Ben Ward said:
'This report makes one thing clear: the UK’s journey to net zero is becoming increasingly challenging, there is a need for an acceleration of the deployment of low-carbon energy sources in partnership with meaningful engagement with the public to shape the way we consume energy in the future.
'The North Sea’s natural gas and emerging carbon capture industry remain essential to powering the country and cutting emissions. Whether this is through continued energy generation or through the production of low-carbon hydrogen.
'But time is tight. Hitting our climate goals is getting harder each year. The UK already has the expertise, experience and world-class supply chains present in existing industries to deliver on the energy transition. To achieve our climate goals we need to continue to support our homegrown energy sectors.
'The scale of investment needed in our energy system is enormous. That’s why it’s vital we prioritise UK firms, their people and their supply chains over imports – supporting jobs, boosting resilience, and making sure our expanding energy mix benefits communities across the country.'
