Peterson Energy Logistics, a global leader in supply chain solutions for the energy sector, has become the first company to be awarded the new ISO 14068 standard for carbon neutrality from the National Quality Assurance (NQA) certification body.

The ISO standard replaces the previous PAS 2060 accreditation scheme, which the company first achieved across its global operations in 2022.

Keith Dawson, HSEQ Director at Peterson, said: 'We are extremely proud to have completed this programme, becoming the first company to be granted ISO 14068 from NQA and the first energy logistics organisation to reach this standard globally. The standard provides a rigorous, transparent framework for measuring, reducing and offsetting carbon emissions, and reinforces our commitment to reaching our own sustainability targets and supporting our clients as the energy transition progresses.'

In the last year, Peterson has seen a significant decrease in carbon emissions by entering a new electricity contract powered by entirely renewable sources, reducing overall emissions by 467 tonnes CO2e. The company also relocated its Aberdeen office base to Marischal Square, a Grade A building and the most environmentally friendly office space in the city, resulting in a further 28 tonnes CO2e savings. From an operational perspective, 50% of Peterson’s transport fleet now run on HVO100 (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), a 100% renewable diesel fuel alternative.

This builds on the wide range of initiatives the company has implemented since first achieving the PAS 2060 standard, including the continued electrification of its truck and forklift fleet, the introduction of the ChangeXL fuel additive, development of its proprietary Lighthouse technology suite for optimal planning in the supply chain, and enhanced employee commuting programmes.

To maintain ISO 14068, companies must demonstrate a proven reduction in year-on-year emissions which aligns with Peterson’s net zero commitment.

Stephen Burt, Carbon & Sustainability Services Director at NQA, said: 'As their Verifier, I was very pleased to complete NQA’s first UKAS Accredited Verification for ISO 14068-1 (Transition to Net Zero – Carbon Neutrality) with Peterson Energy Logistics. ISO 14068-1 is a powerful tool in making the transition to net zero, and Peterson are leading the way. I was very impressed with the company’s commitment to and performance in decarbonisation using industry leading techniques to progress them towards their net zero target.'

Peterson has been recognised for its leading sustainability practices through a series of prestigious industry accolades including the Offshore Achievement Awards, the OEUK Awards, and the Scottish Green Energy Supply Chain Awards in recent years.
