Repsol has launched its own intelligent agent construction platform, placing it at the forefront of the use of agent-based artificial intelligence (AI) and multi-agent systems, and taking another step forward in its digitalization process.

The platform, an innovative pilot project developed in collaboration with Accenture, facilitates the configuration of artificial intelligence agents that are organized into workflows. These multi-agent systems make it easier for teams to create new collaborative environments, enabling employees to improve working models, which in turn boosts productivity.

Throughout the planning and development of the multi-agent system, Repsol has created large knowledge bases designed exclusively for teams to get support from the AI agents. It has also designed an innovative interface that adapts language models to a professional and collaborative environment.

The pilot has been carried out in Repsol's Digitalization and Services department, which has more than 700 employees and where three teams with 22 AI agents have been deployed, providing support for more than four months in processes relevant to the area. Subsequently, more than 50 people have been working collaboratively, supervising teams of AI agents, thus, achieving numerous efficiencies and improvements.

Repsol’s Executive Managing Director of Digitalization and Services, Susana Meseguer, said: 'With the presentation of the multi-agent AI platform, Repsol once again demonstrates its ambition to strengthen its position as one of the pioneering companies in the use of disruptive and innovative technologies in the energy sector. Since we launched our Digital Program more than six years ago, one of our main objectives has been to advance in efficiency and competitiveness, to continue transforming our company with the talent of our employees and digitalization as a key element.'

At the forefront of digitalization and generative AI

Repsol’s Digitalization Program has been in place for more than six years, as one of the key levers for achieving the objectives set out in the company’s Strategic Plan until 2027. Thanks to new technologies, and above all artificial intelligence, the company is undergoing a profound transformation in all areas, enabling it to face the challenges of energy transition and decarbonization head-on.

Since the launch of its Generative AI Competence Center more than two years ago, Repsol has positioned itself as a pioneer in the global energy sector in the use of generative AI, accumulating experiences and tangible results: more than 60 use cases in production, 22 of which have already been scaled up, and the training of more than 5,000 employees in generative AI or advanced prompting techniques.

According to data from a recent study by the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 95% of generative AI initiatives fail because they do not demonstrate real value. This document highlights that Repsol has been able to identify a series of key factors for success: reinventing workflows, committing to multi-agent systems geared towards complex processes, and focusing on people and promoting collaborative professional environments.
