Worley Rosenberg has been awarded the fabrication scope from Subsea7 for key subsea structures and spools supporting Phase II of the Northern Lights carbon transport and storage development – Norway’s flagship carbon capture and storage (CCS) project.

'This award strengthens our position in the growing subsea market and further expands our role in delivering infrastructure that enables large-scale CO2 reduction,' says Jan Narvestad Managing Director Worley Rosenberg.

The contract covers the fabrication of subsea spools and structures for Northern Lights Phase II. It follows Worley Rosenberg’s delivery of comparable subsea structures and spools for Phase I in 2023, demonstrating our continued contribution to the development of Norway’s flagship CCS project. The infrastructure is designed to transport captured CO2 for safe and permanent storage beneath the North Sea seabed.

Expansion of Northern Lights will increase annual CO2 transport and storage capacity from 1.5 million tonnes to more than 5 million tonnes by 2028.

Supporting the next phase of Norway’s CCS journey

Northern Lights is a cornerstone of Norway’s Longship initiative and one of Europe’s most advanced CCS developments. Phase I is now in operation from the Øygarden terminal outside Bergen, with the first volumes of CO2 successfully transported and stored in 2025.

Following the final investment decision for Phase II in March 2025, the project is now entering its next development stage. The expansion will significantly increase transport and storage capacity, helping to decarbonize industrial emissions across Europe and demonstrate how CCS can support the transition to a lower-carbon future.

As industries continue to look for solutions to reduce hard-to-abate emissions, projects like Northern Lights will play an increasingly important role. Establishing reliable CO2 transport and storage infrastructure is a critical enabler for large-scale carbon management and a growing market opportunity for the energy and industrial sectors.

Delivering critical subsea infrastructure

The structures fabricated are essential components in the expanded CO2 transportation system. Once installed, they will support the safe transport of captured carbon dioxide from industrial emitters to permanent geological storage beneath the North Sea.

The award further demonstrates the strength of our fabrication capabilities and our ability to deliver complex subsea infrastructure for both traditional energy and emerging energy-transition markets.

'CCS will be a critical part of achieving global climate goals, particularly for industries where emissions are difficult to eliminate,' Narvestad underlines. 'Northern Lights is one of the most important CCS projects under development today. The award secures activity for our fabrication facilities and deepens our competitive reach in delivering infrastructure for the energy transition.”

The Worley Rosenberg team looks forward to safely delivering this important scope and supporting another milestone in Norway’s energy transition journey.
