A new report from the Norwegian Offshore Directorate shows that, in 2024, there were 24 oil and gas companies on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS). This is the lowest number since activity started up on the shelf. At the same time, developments in exploration activity reveal a clear shift from global to Norwegian players.
Several major international companies have sold their stakes, and there has been considerable consolidation among the remaining companies. This has helped many companies strengthen their positions.
Norwegian oil and gas companies are increasingly dominant in exploration for new resources. Companies that primarily focus on the NCS account for 67 per cent of the resource growth over the last ten years.
The Norwegian Offshore Directorate's new report, An evolving player landscape, is the first phase of a larger study examining the player landscape. This study presents the new company categories and development trends for activity and resource growth on the NCS distributed across the new company categories.
Further efforts will be presented in the Resource Report 2026.
