BNZ, a Next-Generation IPP (independent power producer) that develops, builds, and operates renewable energy projects, has inaugurated its second solar photovoltaic plant in northern Portugal. Specifically, it is located in the municipality of Trofa, in the district of Porto. The inauguration ceremony brought together representatives of local authorities, as well as commercial partners, local associations, and various collaborators.

The commissioning of this project represents a fundamental milestone in BNZ’s expansion strategy in Portugal and in the consolidation of its presence in the European market. With an installed capacity of 28.37 MWp, the Muro plant has an estimated annual production of 43.68 GWh. The clean energy generated by this facility will prevent the emission of more than 4,890 tons of CO2 per year, directly contributing to the decarbonization of the local economy.

The plant was executed under an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract developed jointly with Proef, and was supported by strategic partners such as Andersen, Enertis, and TripleWatt.

As one of its strategic markets, BNZ plans to invest up to 600 million euros in Portugal to deploy nine solar plants, which already include this new Muro facility and its first operational project in the Portuguese market, the Famalicão (Gemunde) plant, also located in the north of the country and with a capacity of 49 MWp.

Given the current energy challenges, the company is also committed to asset hybridization, optimizing its infrastructure with the deployment of 100 MW of battery storage (60 MW of which are concentrated in the north of the country) to provide flexibility to the electrical system, optimize the integration of renewable energy, and contribute to a more stable and efficient grid.

Luis Selva, CEO of BNZ, highlighted: 'The operation of Muro represents a new step in our growth strategy in Portugal and Europe. This project demonstrates our capacity to develop renewable infrastructures that generate clean energy, drive local development, and contribute to energy independence. We will continue to bet on innovation, hybridization, and storage as key elements for advancing toward a more resilient and sustainable energy system.'

For his part, Jordi Francesch, Head of Global Asset Management at Nuveen Infrastructure, stated: 'The European energy transition requires sustained investment, public-private collaboration, and a long-term vision. Muro is an example of how renewable projects can generate tangible benefits for local communities, boost economic competitiveness, and contribute to the climate goals of Portugal and Europe.'

The Mayor of Vila Nova de Famalicão, Sergio Araujo, stated: 'This photovoltaic plant is a source of pride for the municipality of Trofa, not only for its contribution to the energy transition, but also for the confidence that BNZ has placed in the potential of our territory, our companies, and our people. We want this to be just the beginning of a lasting relationship, where Trofa continues to establish itself as a location of excellence to invest, innovate, and build a more sustainable future for Portugal.'

The inauguration of Muro is part of BNZ’s strategy to develop a multi-technology renewable portfolio in Europe. The company currently has more than 2.7 GW in different phases of development, construction, and operation, integrating solar, wind, and storage energy to contribute to energy security and the decarbonization of the European economy.

The Energy Transition as a Driver of Local Development

Being a Next-Generation IPP means going beyond energy generation. For this reason, BNZ integrates the best environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices into all its projects, promoting a positive and lasting impact on the communities where it operates. In the case of the Muro plant, the company prioritized the hiring of local professionals and companies during the development and construction phases, contributing to the sustainable economic growth of the region.

This commitment is also reflected in social initiatives. BNZ has financially supported the recent inauguration of the Residência Villa Cordis, managed by the Santa Casa da Misericórdia da Trofa, a center surrounded by nature that will accommodate 50 residents and offer specialized care to people with dementia. Furthermore, the company collaborates in Portugal with the Ayuda en Acción Foundation through the 'Jovens em Ação' program, aimed at fostering the education, training, and employability of young people in vulnerable situations.

Through these initiatives, BNZ reaffirms its conviction that the energy transition must advance hand-in-hand with social development, generating shared value and well-being for the communities where it carries out its activity.
