Timor-Leste is set to accelerate its clean energy transition after development partners announced support for a landmark solar and battery storage project aimed at improving energy security and reducing reliance on imported diesel. The initiative brings together international partners, including the World Bank Group, to help reshape the country’s power sector and promote sustainable economic growth.

The project will become Timor-Leste’s first utility-scale solar and battery storage development, marking a significant milestone in the country’s renewable energy ambitions. It will include a large-scale solar photovoltaic facility, battery energy storage systems, transmission infrastructure, and related facilities designed to strengthen the reliability of electricity supply.

By increasing access to cleaner and more affordable energy, the investment is expected to support households, businesses, and public services while reducing the country’s dependence on costly fuel imports. The project also aligns with Timor-Leste’s long-term development goals, which include expanding renewable energy use and building a more resilient energy system.

The initiative is expected to create new economic opportunities through job creation, private sector participation, and the development of local technical capacity. Development partners highlighted the importance of renewable energy investments in supporting sustainable growth and improving energy access across the country.

As Timor-Leste works to diversify its economy and strengthen long-term economic resilience, the solar and battery storage project represents a major step toward a cleaner energy future. The investment demonstrates how international cooperation can help emerging economies advance climate goals while improving infrastructure and supporting inclusive development.
