European Energy has, through recent buildouts, reached 2.1 GW of grid-connected renewable capacity across solar, wind, and battery technologies in Denmark.

  • European Energy’s grid-connected capacity in Denmark has reached 2.1 GW across solar, wind and battery technologies.
  • More than 40 projects have been developed, acquired and commissioned since 2013, reflecting long-term portfolio management in Denmark.
  • Battery upgrades from 2026 will increase flexibility and support further optimisation of existing assets.

With the connection of Glejbjerg Solar Park and the battery system in Kvosted Energy Park just before the new year,European Energy has reached 2.1 GW of grid-connected capacity in Denmark, covering solar PV, wind power and battery energy storage systems (BESS).

The 2.1 GW European Energy grid-connected comprises more than 20 per cent of Denmark’s total onshore renewable capacity, estimated at around 8.8 GW. The portfolio includes projects across the country. European Energy currently manages 2 GW of this portfolio.

Despite the milestone for European Energy, there remains significant potential for renewable energy buildout in Denmark. According to the Danish Energy Agency, electricity consumption in Denmark is expected to double by 2040, necessitating a significant expansion of renewable energy capacity.

'We have a strong development portfolio across Denmark, with many solid local partnerships, which only become an asset to the green transition if the projects are actually built and brought into operation. With this achievement, we demonstrate our ability to deliver. We look forward to continuing to support local and national climate and energy targets,' says Maja Rasmussen, Country Manager for Denmark at European Energy.

In addition to building out new power-generating assets, European Energy will focus in 2026 on upgrading existing assets by integrating battery systems. These systems will increase flexibility and enable renewable energy assets to store electricity for use during periods of low solar and wind generation, helping integrate growing renewable capacity into the Danish power system.

Integrating batteries with existing generation assets forms part of European Energy’s ongoing work to adapt projects to system needs and market conditions, as renewable capacity continues to grow in the Danish power system.

'Bringing assets from development into stable operation requires strong coordination across engineering, construction and asset management,” says Poul Jacobsen, EVP and Head of EPC at European Energy.

'Our experience in Denmark shows how assets can continue to evolve after commissioning, including through battery integration and other technical upgrades. This ongoing optimisation supports both long-term operations and the economic performance of the portfolio.'

The Danish renewable asset build-out of European Energy includes more than 40 projects commissioned between 2013 and 2025. Over this period, European Energy has developed, built and operated projects across multiple technologies, contributing to the expansion of renewable energy capacity in Denmark.

European Energy continues to develop, build and operate renewable energy projects in Denmark, with a focus on long-term operations, system optimisation, and cooperation with local stakeholders and municipalities.
