October 6 marks the official inauguration of Tyra II, concluding TotalEnergies’ and the Danish Underground Consortium’s (DUC) work on rebuilding Denmark’s largest ever offshore project. Tyra II restores Denmark’s self-sufficiency and once again makes the country a net exporter of natural gas – a vital contribution to Danish and European energy security at a time of volatility in global energy markets.
'Tyra II is Denmark’s largest gas field and one of Europe’s most significant energy projects. Now that we can deliver twice Denmark’s own gas consumption, we contribute not only to a stable supply at home but also keeping the wheels turning across Europe. It is a strong signal that we can secure energy closer to Europeans and with a lower CO2 footprint than the alternatives,' says Ole Hansen, Managing Director of TotalEnergies EP Denmark.
DKK 27 billion investment and the weight of five Eiffel Towers
Rebuilding Tyra required an investment of DKK 27 billion and the efforts of approximately 1,500 employees and suppliers, both local and international. The project has been characterized by its high complexity, and the result is one of the world’s most advanced offshore gas installations weighing 35,000 tons – equivalent to five Eiffel Towers.
'This is historic for Denmark and for the North Sea. Tyra has become a reality through 46 million working hours and the outstanding efforts of our people in Esbjerg and offshore. It is proof that the North Sea industry’s expertise is world-class – and that it continues to play a central role in Europe’s energy security,' says Ole Hansen.
Contributing to the Danish economy
Tyra can deliver up to 2.8 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year – equal to 6% of the EU’s own production and 1% of total European consumption. At current gas prices, this represents an annual value creation in the double-digit billions of DKK, strengthening both Denmark’s economy and Europe’s energy supply.
About Tyra
Since 1984, the Tyra field has been the hub of Denmark’s gas production. With Tyra II, supply is secured for decades to come, and Denmark can once again export gas to the European market through pipelines to both Nybro in Denmark and Den Helder in the Netherlands.
Facts about Tyra II
- Rebuilt at a cost of DKK 27 billion, making it Denmark’s largest energy project.
- Restores Denmark’s self-sufficiency and net exporter status in gas.
- Significant European impact – delivers up to 2.8 billion m³ of gas annually, equal to 6% of EU production and 1% of total European consumption.
- Large scale – the facility weighs approx. 35,000 tons, the same as five Eiffel Towers.
- Climate advantage – expected to emit up to 30% less CO2 than the previous facilities.
- Esbjerg at the center: approx. 1,000 of TotalEnergies’ 1,200 employees in Denmark work in Esbjerg and offshore. In 2024, DKK 4 billion was spent on suppliers in and around Esbjerg.
