The Vattenfall Offshore Wind Farm Sandbank was awarded 'Best Operating Offshore Wind Farm 2025' at the 15th Offshore Wind Economic Forum in Sylt. The award was presented on 28 August and was received by Michael Lorenzen, Head of Operations Offshore Germany, on behalf of the operating teams.
The operational award recognises the performance of offshore wind farms in the areas of technology, economic operation, and occupational safety. The award for 2025 acknowledges the successful operation of Sandbank. The daily work of the colleagues who ensure safe and reliable operation is particularly in focus. In 2018, DanTysk was awarded as the best offshore wind farm. Now, Sandbank follows as another wind farm from the German offshore portfolio.
'We are very pleased with the recognition of Sandbank as the best operating offshore wind farm 2025. It is primarily an acknowledgment for the colleagues who ensure that Sandbank reliably and safely delivers power from the North Sea every day. The successful operation of existing offshore wind farms is just as important for the energy transition as the construction of new projects. Therefore, we are especially delighted that, following DanTysk, Sandbank has now received this award,' says Catrin Jung, Head of Business Area Wind at Vattenfall.
Michael Lorenzen, Head of Operations Offshore Germany, adds: 'This award belongs primarily to our teams who operate Sandbank safely and reliably every day. It demonstrates what is possible with commitment, expertise, and good collaboration. The fact that two of our wind farms have now received this award makes us particularly proud.'
Catrin Jung had already participated as a panellist in the Offshore Wind Economic Forum the day before. During a discussion with international representatives from the industry, the focus was on the future of the European offshore wind market, investment conditions, and the role of offshore wind energy in the energy transition.
Sandbank offshore wind farm, located 90 kilometres off the coast of Schleswig-Holstein, right next to DanTysk, was completed in 2017. It was Vattenfall's second major wind project in the German North Sea.
The wind farm covers a total area of 60 square kilometres. The Sandbank and DanTysk wind farms benefit from a unique concept in the North Sea, sharing an accommodation platform located in the middle of DanTysk. Another advantage is that the three offshore wind farms Sandbank, DanTysk and Horns Rev achieve synergies by using the same vessels, infrastructure and facilities.
Joint project
Sandbank is the second joint project between Vattenfall and Stadtwerke München, following the completion of DanTysk in 2014. Vattenfall owns 51% of Sandbank, while Stadtwerke München owns the remaining 49%.
