Sun and wind will join forces in the southern Eifel region: Vattenfall is opening the Hommerdingen-Biesdorf hybrid power plant today, October 30, 2026, in the presence of Michael Ebling, Minister for Economic Affairs, Tourism, Energy and Climate of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. For the first time in Germany, the company is combining electricity generation from wind and solar power under one roof, thus implementing a concept that Vattenfall has been successfully operating for several years in the Netherlands and Great Britain, among other places.
The Hommerdingen-Biesdorf hybrid power plant consists of four wind turbines with a combined rated output of 17 megawatts (MW) and more than 12,000 solar modules with a rated output of 7.6 MWp. It is located on the municipal boundaries of Hommerdingen (wind farm) and Biesdorf (solar), which belong to the Verbandsgemeinde Südeifel near the Luxembourg border.
Hybrid parks – two power plants, one grid connection
With the Hommerdingen-Biesdorf project, Vattenfall is pursuing the approach of connecting the solar park and the wind farm to the distribution network of the regional operator Westnetz via a single grid connection. The solar park is technically treated like another wind turbine, so only one grid connection is needed for the entire facility. Westnetz has agreed to this innovative concept.
At the opening of the hybrid park, Rhineland-Palatinate's Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, Michael Ebling, said : 'The Hommerdingen-Biesdorf hybrid park is a flagship project for a smart, efficient, and economical energy transition. It demonstrates that wind and solar energy don't have to compete for scarce grid capacity, but can complement each other effectively. The crucial factor is not just generating more renewable electricity, but also integrating it into our power grids as efficiently as possible. For such innovative solutions to become widespread, we need reliable framework conditions, fast permitting processes, and intelligent grid connection concepts. At the same time, the project shows how entrepreneurial courage, technological innovation, and local commitment can work together. Because the energy transition takes place locally – and people and communities should benefit from it through regional value creation. I hope this project will inspire many others in Rhineland-Palatinate.'
The complementary generation profiles of wind and solar power utilize the distribution grid more efficiently compared to either technology individually. This leads to better overall use of the existing grid infrastructure and reduces the risk of grid overload. Furthermore, grid connection costs are significantly lower compared to stand-alone systems.
Catrin Jung , Senior Vice President and Head of the Wind Business Unit at Vattenfall, said: 'We are delighted to have now realized our first hybrid project in Germany. This is especially true because we were able to leverage our existing expertise from previous projects. The Hommerdingen-Biesdorf project demonstrates how the energy transition can succeed: through the intelligent combination of wind and solar power, the efficient use of existing infrastructure, and the close collaboration of many partners in the region. We intend to continue this success story and plan to supplement our renewable energy generation with storage in the future to make the renewable energy system even more flexible and robust.'
