Spain: Repsol and Forestalia promote Spain's largest power hybridization project in the region of Aragon

16 Oct 2025

  • Repsol's combined cycle power plant in Escatrón (818 MW), Zaragoza (Spain), will be hybridized with fifteen wind farms with a combined installed capacity of 805 MW acquired from Forestalia.
  • This hybridization, with a total capacity of more than 1,600 MW, supports the development of a large data center in the area by an investor.

Repsol and Forestalia will promote the largest energy hybridization project in Spain and one of the largest worldwide in the northern Spanish region of Aragon. Repsol's 818 MW combined cycle power plant in Escatrón, Zaragoza, will be hybridized with fifteen wind farms, totaling 805 MW, acquired from Forestalia, which will continue to be the developer until they are commissioned.

This hybridization project will add more than 1,600 MW from two different energy sources, but sharing the same connection point to the grid, which will permit the complementarity of both sources to be exploited, stabilizing supply, maximizing the use of the connection point to the grid, and optimizing infrastructure and maintenance.

The wind farms that form part of the project are in the processing and development phase and have received a favorable Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). They will share the evacuation infrastructure to the power station, which optimizes resources and streamlines operational integration.

Data center

This project has clear synergies with the development, by a third party, of a data center in the vicinity of the power plant. For this data center, Repsol has already secured grid connection approval from the Spanish system operator, Red Eléctrica de España, for the connection of 402 MW of renewable energy self-consumption. This will be complemented by more than 800 MW of support energy provided through hybridization, giving this future data center one of the highest power capacities in the country.

Repsol's Executive Managing Director of Low Carbon Generation, João Costeira, said: 'This innovative hybridization project optimizes our renewable portfolio, taking advantage of the strategic location and high interconnection capacity of the Escatrón power plant. Additionally, it will allow the data center developers to self-consume renewable energy from wind sources.'

For its part, Forestalia, with a broad portfolio of projects at an advanced stage of development, reaffirms its commitment to renewable energy in the region of Aragon. In the words of its Director of Wind and Solar Development, Fernando Samper García: 'This is an opportunity for the company to position itself differently in the market, providing innovative renewable energy solutions.'
