RWE, a global leader in renewable energy, has signed an eight-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Carlsberg Sverige, one of Sweden’s largest beverage companies. Under the terms of the agreement, Carlsberg will source electricity produced from the nearby Örken onshore wind farm to power its brewery in Falkenberg, Halland.

From January 2026 until December 2033, RWE will supply a total of 25 gigawatt hours of clean electricity annually to Carlsberg, which is enough to power around 80% of the brewery’s energy needs in Sweden. The Örken wind farm, located in south-western Sweden, has eight turbines and a capacity of 26 megawatts (MW).

Olaf Lubenow, Head of Commodity Solutions UK, North & South Europe at RWE Supply & Trading: 'This long-term agreement will enable Carlsberg Sweden to meet an increasing proportion of its energy needs from renewable sources. At RWE we are committed to helping industries achieve their decarbonization targets. We are proud to be a trusted partner of the global Carlsberg brand.'

Jonas Kudermann, VP Integrated Supply Chain at Carlsberg Sverige: 'We are firmly committed to reducing our carbon emissions and are working intensively in several ways to achieve this. The investment in wind power is an important step on our journey towards Net Zero by 2040, and we are pleased to be able to meet 80 percent of our energy needs with renewable and locally produced wind power from Halland.'

Carlsberg Sweden combines growth and sustainability

Carlsberg Sweden was the first brewery within the Carlsberg Group, and the first major brewery in Sweden, to use only renewable energy (green certified electricity along with self-produced and purchased biogas) in the production. All beverages have been produced using 100% renewable energy since 2017.

With the PPA agreement the company continues to invest in the green transition and the expansion of renewable energy in Sweden. The agreement is an important step in Carlsberg Sweden’s long-term sustainability efforts and strengthens the company’s position as one of the country’s most sustainable beverage producers.

In recent years, the company has grown its business and strengthened its brands, while reducing its climate impact. This is the result of a determined effort to combine strong growth with reduced climate footprint through sustainable solutions.

A leading renewable company

With a total renewable and flexible capacity of more than 38 GW, RWE is a major player in the renewable energy sector. For renewable project developers such as RWE, PPAs provide financial certainty, thus helping to accelerate the construction of new renewable energy assets. PPAs offer RWE's customers the benefit of stable and predictable costs while improving their carbon footprint. PPAs also help companies to meet their carbon reduction targets in a cost-effective way.
