Prime Minister Andy Burnham is preparing to move quickly on decisions over the Jackdaw and Rosebank developments, with industry sources indicating approvals could be granted within weeks.

The Times reports that ministers believe bringing the projects into production could support the government's wider efforts to tackle the cost of living, and will move as soon as the consultations on both end.

One source close to the projects told the newspaper: 'Once we are past the consultation phase, the ball is in their court. From the sounds of it, there is willingness to move quickly this time around.

'An August approval would allow production to commence by October 1. Everything is constructed, the platform is in place, it’s just a piece of paper standing in the way.'

The report says Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh, who visited Aberdeen on Thursday, will make the final decision once the consultation process concludes in mid-August

Before entering Parliament, Fahnbulleh had opposed Rosebank, but this week told Times Radio: 'I think it is about pragmatism.'

Richard Baker, Labour MP for Glenrothes & Mid Fife and chairman of the Scottish parliamentary party, said: 'Progressing with Jackdaw and Rosebank would both be in line with our manifesto commitments on energy and be a vital boost for energy skills jobs in Scotland and throughout the UK.'

Russell Borthwick, chief executive of Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce, said: 'The positive noises coming from the new prime minister around the approval of Jackdaw and Rosebank are certainly welcome, and it seems that the regulatory process is pressing on now after a long hiatus.

'These multibillion-pound projects represent thousands of jobs and a vast supply chain right across the UK.

'Ensuring they are approved in the coming weeks to provide the energy the UK needs this winter will be the first major test for Andy Burnham’s government and their sense of purpose on energy security and investment.'
