The North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) has (30 September 2025) moved to support the growing carbon storage industry by issuing a set of Stewardship Expectations to help licensees meet their obligations in this growing industry.

The five areas covered by the Expectations are:

  • Risk assessment
  • Appraisal and sub-surface characterisation
  • Data acquisition and use for appraisal and monitoring?
  • Technology development and deployment
  • Stakeholder engagement

The need for each Expectation is explained, alongside a detailed roadmap of how a licensee may meet regulatory requirements and best practice suggestions.

The Stewardship Expectations can be viewed here.
