The proposed 86 MW Highlands project is Low Carbon’s third wind farm to be submitted for planning in Scotland as it continues to strengthen its renewables pipeline across the UK

Renewable energy company, Low Carbon, has successfully submitted its Section 36 planning application to the Scottish Government’s Energy Consents Unit for the Forsinain Forest Wind Farm.

Located in the Scottish Highlands 3 km north of Forsinard and 16 km south of Melvich, the proposed site sits predominantly within non-native commercial forestry and fully outwith the Flow Country UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The project, if approved, will comprise of up to 12 turbines and associated infrastructure, including new and upgraded access tracks, a substation, and on-site construction facilities.

With an installed capacity of up to 86 MW, the wind farm is expected to generate around 318,000 MWh of clean electricity annually once built, enough to power more than 98,000 UK homes each year, while avoiding over 135,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

The project incorporates extensive forest-to-bog restoration within its footprint, helping to restore peatland habitats and support long-term carbon sequestration alongside renewable energy generation.

Alongside its contribution to clean power generation, the project will deliver long-term value for the local area. If approved and once operational, the project proposes a community benefit fund of £5,000 per MW, equivalent to approximately £432,000 per year, as well an estimated £1 million annually in business rates to Highland Council.

Andy Sloan, Project Development Director at Low Carbon, said:

'Forsinain Forest is a key part of our growing pipeline of onshore wind in Scotland, which if approved, will support Scottish climate targets, help accelerate the UK’s transition to clean energy and bolster energy security by reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.

'By combining clean energy generation with nature restoration and long-term community benefit, Forsinain Forest can help to deliver lasting economic value for the communities that host it.'
