Ed Miliband has doubled down on his position that clean power is 'the best way' to bring down energy bills in the face of opposition from rival parties.
Opposition parties have called for green levies to be axed as energy bills rise, but energy secretary Miliband has labelled fossil fuel reliance the UK's 'Achilles' heel' and insisted clean power is still the only way to bring down costs, the BBC reports.
The Labour government has set a target of supplying 95% of electricity demand through clean power by 2030, with Miliband also pledging to slash average bills by £300 by the same date.
However, an update to energy regulator Ofgem's price cap this month as resulted in millions of people across Scotland, England and Wales seeing a 2% rise in their bills.
Both the Conservatives and Reform UK have laid the blame for higher prices on net-zero policies.
Despite a legally-binding agreement to achieve net-zero by 2050 receiving cross-party support in 2019, the Conservatives have since moved to pledge the party would scrap the target, cut subsidies for renewables and end taxes on carbon emissions.
Reform UK has pledged to scrap net zero and 'wage war' on renewables developers if it wins power.
