National Grid is set to deliver two supergrid transformers (SGTs) to key substations in central and east London this August, as part of ongoing investment to strengthen and futureproof the capital’s electricity transmission infrastructure.

Transformers, often weighing 180 tonnes, play a vital role in helping to ensure the safe and reliable flow of energy to communities, stepping electricity voltage down so it can be efficiently distributed to homes and businesses via local networks.

On Sunday 10 August, a transformer will be transported from Willington substation in Derbyshire to Redbridge substation in Woodford Green. The 142-mile journey will be managed by specialist hauliers under police escort, with traffic management measures in place to minimise disruption. No road closures are planned.

The following weekend, from Friday 15–Monday 18 August, another SGT will be delivered to New Cross substation from the Port of Tilbury. The delivery is part of National Grid’s £1 billion London Power Tunnels (LPT) project, which is rewiring the capital via deep underground tunnels.

The 90-mile route to New Cross substation includes a temporary road closure on Old Kent Road (A2) between Devon Street and Ruby Street, from 9pm on Saturday 16 August until 10pm on Monday 18 August. Diversion routes will be clearly signposted, and local residents and businesses have been notified in advance.

For both deliveries, the routes have been carefully coordinated with highways authorities and the police, and while all efforts have been made to minimise disruption, road users may experience minor delays.

A National Grid Electricity Transmission spokesperson said:

'We’ve worked closely with local authorities, police and our specialist haulage partners to carefully plan these deliveries to minimise disruption to road users and local people. These transformers are essential to strengthening London’s electricity network and supporting future energy demands, so we appreciate communities’ patience while we carry out this important work.

'Local residents with any questions or concerns can contact National Grid’s community relations team via email at communityrelations@nationalgrid.com or by calling 0800 2793408 (Monday to Friday between 9am-5pm).'
