'2030 is just around the corner. This timely report shows why a whole system approach is needed to decarbonise our grid, and why reshaping demand is just as important as recasting supply. This will take massive private sector investment, planning reform and co-ordination so it’s essential government partners with industry to maximise chances of success. Close linkage with the UK’s new industrial strategy will be critical.
'The UK’s offshore energies industry has always been solutions focused. It has the expertise and skills we need to build our energy future. Today, the UK relies on oil and gas for 75 per cent of its energy and 85 per cent of households have a gas boiler. As we plan, fund and build a clean electricity grid to meet part of our energy needs, it makes sense to back homegrown production and the jobs and economic value it delivers today and can for years to come.
'The UK is embarking on a massive investment programme. The costs of transforming our energy system and how they are borne will be key to the affordability of our energy future.'
Michael Tholen expanded on these views during an appearance on STV, where he discussed the release of the National Energy System Operator Clean Power 2030 advice to the government.
