Commenting on a speech by the Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the COP summit in Brazil highlighting new renewable energy jobs in offshore wind and battery storage in Greater Manchester, Belfast and Great Yarmouth, RenewableUK’s Deputy CEO Jane Cooper said:
'The Prime Minister is right to highlight to the rest of the world the UK’s success in creating clean energy jobs throughout the country as a blueprint for global economic growth. The wind industry alone already employs 55,000 people and this is set to double by 2030. Every gigawatt of offshore wind we build brings £2-3 billion in private investment to the UK, as well as providing us with extraordinary opportunities to transform ports into centres of excellence for assembling and installing state-of-the-art turbines.
'As today’s announcement shows, our innovative battery storage sector is also expanding fast, developing cutting-edge technology at scale to build more flexibility into our modern energy system, enabling us to make the most of the vast quantities of clean power we’re generating.
'These technologies are keeping British homes and businesses powered using cost-competitive clean energy sources that reduce our exposure to volatile fluctuations in global fossil fuel prices, so they’re good news for billpayers too'.
