RWE, a world leader in offshore wind, has proudly celebrated 10 years since the official inauguration of Humber Gateway Offshore Wind Farm, located 8km off the East Yorkshire coast. Since it became fully operational in 2015, the wind farm has played a significant role in the UK’s ongoing transition to a low-carbon future, powering homes with clean, renewable electricity and investing in the local community.
Humber Gateway’s 73 turbines can collectively generate up to 219 megawatts (MW) of electricity, enough to power up to 199,000 typical UK homes1, more than one and a half times the number of households in Hull. The RWE project has created long-term, skilled roles within the company and across its supply chain, whilst continuing to provide economic investments for Humber based communities and companies alike.

The wind farm was officially opened by Andrea Leadsom MP, then UK Government Minister of State for Energy and Climate Change, on 30th September 2015. Humber Gateway represented an investment of around £700million in the UK’s electricity infrastructure.
Humber Gateway Offshore Wind Farm is situated just north of the mouth of the river Humber, 8km from the Holderness coastline. It is owned by RWE (51%), alongside project partner Greencoat (49%). The ongoing operation of the wind farm is managed by RWE from a dedicated operations and maintenance base located at Fish Docks in Grimsby, which supports 47 full-time operational roles on the project.
A local powerhouse
Humber Gateway is committed to developing local talent through RWE’s offshore wind turbine technician apprenticeship programme. Eight apprentices have already completed training and now work full-time at RWE, with four more currently in training and another beginning this year.
Over the past decade, Humber Gateway has supported a wide range of community initiatives. In 2023, RWE relaunched the Humber Gateway Community Fund with the Lincolnshire Community Foundation, pledging £40,000 annually until at least 2028. In 2025 alone, 23 local projects have received grants to strengthen vital services and activities in Grimsby and Cleethorpes.
The Humber Gateway team also partners with schools and colleges to inspire young people through skills and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) activities. By hosting events and delivering interactive sessions, the team has engaged and inspired hundreds of students across the region.
