Following a strategic review and decision to restructure its portfolio, Storegga, an independent developer of CCS and hydrogen projects, has announced the sale of the Cromarty Hydrogen Project and its wider green hydrogen portfolio to Protium. This marks the next stage for these projects under new ownership.
Over recent years, Storegga has developed a portfolio of green hydrogen opportunities in Scotland, progressing early-stage concepts into credible projects through technical development, stakeholder engagement and close collaboration with partners. In December 2024, the Cromarty Hydrogen Project became one of the first three projects in the UK to secure a Hydrogen Business Model contract through the Low Carbon Contracts Company, marking an important milestone for both the project and the wider UK hydrogen sector.
More broadly, Storegga has played an active role in shaping the early hydrogen landscape in Scotland and the UK, working with government, industry and academia to help define the framework, build understanding of market requirements and support the development of a viable hydrogen economy.
Tim Stedman, CEO of Storegga, said:
'This transaction reflects a focus on ensuring these projects are taken forward by a developer with the platform and capability to build on the work achieved to date. Protium’s track record in developing and operating hydrogen infrastructure in the UK, alongside its growing national presence, positions it well to take this portfolio forward.
'We look forward to seeing Cromarty and the wider projects continue to develop, supporting jobs, industry and a more sustainable industrial future in Scotland.'
