Country profile
Since the beginning of hydrocarbon exploration in Austria, more than 4,400 wells have been drilled; the deepest reaching 8533 m. In addition, extensive geophysical surveys have been conducted. Cumulative Austrian production is equal to 108,5 MM tonnes of oil and 72.1 Bm3 of gas.
The most important hydrocarbon provinces of Austria are the Vienna basin, the Molasse Zone and the Northern Alps. The first of these areas, the intramontane Vienna Basin, has produced by far the largest volumes of hydrocarbons and also provided Austria's earliest production.
